Vanitas, (from Latin vanitas, “vanity”), in art, a genre of still-life painting that flourished in the Netherlands in the early 17th century. It is a symbolic work of art showing the transience of life, the futility of pleasure, and the certainty of death, often contrasting symbols of wealth and symbols of ephemerality and death.
I started to paint this series in the midst of the Pandemic Lockdown, using elements that for me a have a strong relationship with the city where I live: Berlin. This last year we had enough time to take a look at ourselves and what surrounds us. Part of what I observed is in this series. Being a still life is ironically one of my most personal works but in opposition with the grim message of the original Vanitas art, I describe a vibrant and lush setup with symbols of our daily life.
