Something about what is behind this painting:

This is my personal version of the woodcut from Käthe Kollwitz, “The Mothers”: The women in this sheet hold back their children, some of whom are seen peeping out from behind their mothers, to prevent them from being sacrificed in a war.
You can see the work of the German artist in her museum in Berlin and Cologne.

She worked with painting, printmaking (including lithography and woodcuts) and sculpture. Her most famous art cycles, including The Weavers and The Peasant War, depict the effects of poverty, hunger and war on the working class. Despite the realism of her early works, her art is now more closely associated with Expressionism.
