Diana and Endymion
Part of the exhibition Seance of Tales in Technicolour.
Acrylic on canvas
100x80 cm
In ancient myth, Diana, the Roman goddess of the moon and the hunt, was known for her independence, strength, and untouchable nature. But even she, fierce and divine, once fell in love.
Her heart was captured by Endymion, a beautiful mortal shepherd who lived far from the noise of the world. Gentle and serene, Endymion slept beneath the stars each night. Diana would watch him from the sky, quietly descending to visit him as he dreamed. Unable to bear the thought of losing him to time, she made a choice both tender and tragic: she asked Zeus to grant Endymion eternal sleep, so he would never age, never change, and she could keep loving him forever, exactly as he was.
He sleeps still, untouched by time, as Diana continues to visit him under the moonlight.
This painting was part of an exhibition about grief, but also about love. It speaks to that bittersweet space between holding on and letting go. A reminder that love doesn’t always shout or bloom loudly; sometimes, it waits in silence, watches gently, and endures quietly, just beyond reach.
For anyone who’s ever loved someone they couldn’t fully keep, or carried someone in their heart long after they were gone, this is for you.
